Deeply felt, sharply observed, and utterly contemporary. Liz, Aiden, and Sylvie are an urban, urbane, progressive family: Aiden's a therapist who refuses to own a car; Liz is an ambitious professional, a savvy traveler with a flair for decorating; Sylvie is a smart and political 19 year-old, fiercely independent, sensitive to hypocrisy, and crazy in love with her childhood playmate, Noah, a bright young scientist. Things seem to be going according to plan. Then the present and the past collide in a crisis that shatters the complacency of all three. Liz and Sylvie are forced to confront a tragedy from years before, when four children went missing at an artists' retreat. In the long shadow of that event, the family is drawn to a dangerous precipice.

This was a phenomenal book and Joan Thomas, who i had never heard of before, is now going to hit my top 10 list of authors to read. If you have been a parent or spouse you will appreciate the amazing way in which she captures the emotions and difficulties that arise when a parent and child struggle with their relationship.

After Thomas' other books, I was disappointed by this very ordinary story of a middle class family in Winnipeg. The book is too long, with too much crammed into the last chapters.

I finished this book the day before Joan Thomas was named as a candidate for the Gov. Gen. Awards. Couldn't think of a more deserving nominee. Whatever the outcome, this is one fine piece of writing, A wonderful exploration of how a modern family works..and doesn't .This one will be on my shelf a long time.
