The book ‘The Empress of all Seasons’ takes place in feudal Japan. It switches perspectives between the three main characters; Mari the youkai, Taro the son of the shogun(ruler of Japan), and Akira the outcast. Similarly to many other teen novels, the book has a love triangle in between the three main characters, however in the end, it takes an incredibly unique turn with the somewhat clichéd theme that it has. Throughout the book, there are many interesting and action-packed fight scenes, and the good use of adjectives helped me to paint an incredible picture in my head. Each of the three characters are well developed, and each of their pasts are displayed, showing how and why they are what they are during the story. All of the characters also develop well, showing change in their characteristics and behaviour from the beginning to the end of the book, something that I find rare in many cases. In the climax of the book, one of the main characters die, and while this is not uncommon, it was not done well, and to me made the ending of the book very unsatisfactory. The epilogue of the book tries to cover up for the ending of the book, however, in my opinion was unable to account for the very abrupt and unsatisfactory ending. However, despite the ending, the book itself is very good, and made me want to keep reading, managing to keep very few moments within the book boring. I would suggest this book to anyone who enjoys the fantasy genre. 3.5/5. @Xeno of the Hamilton Public Library Teen Review Board
