Business is booming for private investigator Nils Shapiro and his partners. Lawyer Todd Rabinowitz is found tied to the dock outside his Minnesota home with a fishing stinger through his jaw. His widow, Robin Rabinowitz, calls Nils to the crime scene and asks him to investigate her husband's savage murder. She's not the only one. Soon, Nils has more job offers than he can handle. Robin's boyfriend. Todd's partner at his law firm. One of Todd's clients, a polarizing Congressional candidate. The local police, in over their heads. The FBI. Their motives are complicated at best, and as Nils unravels the convoluted case, the bodies pile up. Someone doesn't want him to discover what happened to Todd, and won't stop until they silence Nils as well.

This is the first of Goldman's books that I have read. Plot twists make the narrative interesting and Nils Shapiro is a likable, smart and humorous protagonist.

The final chapters of The Shallows are amazing. I won't reveal them, but they are a treat to anyone who is dismayed at current affairs. As a mystery story, The Shallows is good reading. Lots of punishing action, the characters are relatable, the plot is well-constructed (surprising, yet well-foreshadowed) and the setting is compelling. However, I found the beginning slow to get into; the prose was plain and lacked profluency for me, but about 20 pages in, I was caught up until the end. Either the style changed, or I got used to the style. I don't know which, but I am glad I kept on reading.

IMHO not Goldman's best work. Don't get me wrong, when #4 comes out I'm going to read it

"The Shallows" is Matt Golman's best book so far. Nils Shapiro's character is much more confident and his wit is more public. There are more twists in this mystery than in a bag of pretzels, and his story is so very current. Enjoy.
