"Zombies have infested a fallen America. A young girl named Temple is on the run. Haunted by her past and pursued by a killer, Temple is surrounded by death and danger, hoping to be set free. For twenty-five years, civilization has survived in meager enclaves, guarded against a plague of the dead. Temple wanders this blighted landscape, keeping to herself and keeping her demons inside her heart. She can't remember a time before the zombies, but she does remember an old man who took her in and the younger brother she cared for until the tragedy that set her on a personal journey toward redemption. Moving back and forth between the insulated remnants of society and the brutal frontier beyond, Temple must decide where ultimately to make a home and find the salvation she seeks" --Publisher description.

Very well done; beautiful. Dark.

Not just "a" literary zombie novel, but THE literary zombie novel. I hate first person present tense, but he's such an amazing writer, a poet, that I didn't care in this case.

Dark but humane, violent and realistic, affecting characters.

I read it in 2014 and ranked it as one of the top 5 books I read that year.

This book was not a typical zombie story and was very creative.

Well-written addition to the zombie canon. Small moments of almost excruciating beauty. Wasn't so sure about the mutant bit in the middle...

Loved this book. Like all great zombie fiction it's not really about the Zs, and the main character's voice and phrasing throughout the story evokes such rich imagery. Somehow the second book in the series (it's a prequel for a different character) hasn't found a publisher in the USA so you have to find a copy from the UK for more of this wonderful story.

Wow what a beautiful book! I had no idea that a zombie book could be so pretty. Great leading character you will love. I also liked how the zombies were called slugs, it just made it diffrent. Good read but over way too soon. I wanted it never to end.

Amazing. You start to forget it's a zombie book as it turns into something so much more. Temple is such a great character and the plot just drives forward. At points was almost too graphic, but the phenomenal writing over powered any disgust I had.

Terrific story... unique in this genre. Superb main charcters and dialogue. Did not rely on cliche or gratuitous gore! Surprising how enjoyable it is to read the demise of our (deserving) current culture...

Thoroughly enjoyed this book, as a fan of apocalypse and horror dramas, I have to say it is one of the best I've read. You bond to the lead character and grieve for her new world. Recommend it.
