A unique story told in the first person, this is the history of Kvothe (Kah-VOHTH), an adventurer who has traveled his fantasy world and endured immense suffering and pain in his attempt to learn and love. Considered a new classic of High Fantasy, this is the first book in an incomplete trilogy.

Emma's rec. "Big complicated fantasy world"

CCPL_Carly Feb 03, 2020

This first volume in a planned trilogy is a richly-detailed, epic fantasy story with a likeable, intelligent hero and plenty of dramatic scenes to keep the plot going. Readers will be left wanting more of Kvothe's story and can continue the series in The Wise Man's Fear. The third book is not yet published. Readers may enjoy the detailed hierarchy of The University setting and Kvothe's quest for knowledge.

Probably my favorite book I have read this year. While probably categorized as young adult fantasy, I think anyone could read this and enjoy it. The author is truly a gifted storyteller. While there are no big battle scenes and not a bunch of cliffhanger storylines to pull you through the book, the story itself is so well written and the main characters so well developed that you really won't care. I can't believe it has taken me this long to find this book, although maybe that is a good thing since I hear that the author has been sitting on the final book of the series for 8 years and ignoring his many fans. (Game of Thrones fans - you are not alone.)

Quite possibly one of the best, most intense, gut-wrenching, emotional, magical, and tragic books I have ever read. Highly recommended. Patrick Rothfuss needs to finish the third one!

I enjoyed this book and the book to follow very much. My only hang up to recommending this series is the third book may never be finished. So sad to start a great fantasy and never read the end. But if your already waiting, I recommend "the slow regard of silent things" I enjoyed it maybe more than I should have, but I have been waiting for book 3 for so long...it made me happy to be back in Rothfuss's wold.

One of the books that I recommend the most. Just give it a shot, I think you'll find yourself turning the pages even if you are not a fantasy fan. Just be warned that the third and final book in the series has been delayed with no time table for its release.

OMG! I loved this book. I quickly devoured it and moved on to the next book. I have been eagerly waiting for book 3 to come out. I don't want this series to ever end. However it has been years and still no book 3. I hope he doesn't give up. Something is stopping him from finishing this series.

I now own the anniversary edition of this book. I couldn't possibly give this book a higher recommendation; if it was possible for me to give this book 15 stars I would. If you're into Fantasy, Action, and Romance please check this out!

“When the hearthfire turns to blue,
what to do? what to do?
run outside, run and hide

when his eyes are black as crow?
where to go? where to go?
near and far. Here they are.

see a man without a face?
move like ghosts from place to place.
whats their plan? whats their plan?
Chandrian. Chandrian”

“Words are pale shadows of forgotten names. As names have power, words have power. Words can light fires in the minds of men. Words can wring tears from the hardest hearts. There are seven words that will make a person love you. There are ten words that will break a strong man's will. But a word is nothing but a painting of a fire. A name is the fire itself.”
